01Course Synopsis

CEC offers three Levels of Certificate in English. Students can choose their course depending on their language level and schedule.

Our English courses are for anyone who wishes to learn to communicate in English and to feel comfortable in an English-speaking environment; the course is also suitable for anyone who is preparing to enter tertiary education.

These English courses are for students who want to attend classes every day to improve their level of general English, as well as for those who wish to progress further in their grasp of the English Language.

02Entry Requirement
  • Minimum 12 years of age
  • No academic requirement (for all levels)

The entry requirements for the Certificate in English are directly linked to the scores students attain from the placement test set by our qualified teachers and approved by our Academic Board.

The placement test is designed to help our consultants make decisions about which class to place students in or whether a student can join a particular course. The test covers grammar, vocabulary and speaking ability.
03Award Criteria

Certificates are granted to students who undertake a full-term English module for 12 weeks or more.

  • Non-Student's Pass Holders: 75% attendance & 65% or above for Progress Test
  • Student's Pass Holders: 90% attendance & 65% or above for Progress Test
04Certificate in English β€” Elementary

By the end of this level, students will be able to:

Grammar

Understand and use a range of simple grammatical structures and sentence patterns.

Writing

Write simple phrases and link sentences with "and", "but" and "because".

Reading

Understand short texts containing high frequency vocabulary.

Speaking

Understand and speak about simple, routine tasks and familiar matters with simple exchanges of information.

Listening

Understand phrases and expressions related to areas of priority.

Vocabulary

Use a narrow repertoire of vocabulary dealing with everyday needs.

Pronunciation

Speak clearly enough to be understood, despite a noticeable foreign accent.

05Certificate in English β€” Intermediate

By the end of this level, students will be able to:

Grammar

Understand and use a range of common grammatical structures and sentence patterns.

Writing

Write simple phrases, sentences and paragraphs linked with simple connectors. Compose simple correspondence and descriptions of personal life and past experiences.

Reading

Understand short, simple texts on familiar matters with a satisfactory level of comprehension.

Speaking

Manage simple, routine exchanges without long delays or too much effort, and ask and answer questions on familiar everyday topics.

Listening

Sustain a brief monologue about current life and past experiences. Understand straightforward factual information on common everyday topics β€” both general messages and specific details, when speech is clear.

Vocabulary

Use a repertoire of vocabulary for basic communicative needs and simple descriptions of personal life and experiences.

Pronunciation

Speak clearly intelligibly, despite a foreign accent and occasional mispronunciation.

06Certificate in English β€” Advanced

By the end of this level, students will be able to:

Grammar

Demonstrate a relatively high degree of grammatical control, avoiding mistakes that lead to misunderstanding, with a good understanding of less frequent and complex grammatical structures.

Writing

Write clear, detailed texts on a variety of subjects, evaluating information and arguments from a number of sources.

Reading

Read with a large degree of independence, adapting style and speed of reading to different texts and purposes, and using appropriate reference sources effectively.

Speaking

Highlight the personal significance of events and experiences, and account for views clearly with relevant explanations and arguments.

Listening

Understand the main ideas of propositionally and linguistically complex speech on both concrete and abstract topics in standard dialect.

Vocabulary

Demonstrate a high level of lexical accuracy with a good range of vocabulary for matters in one's field as well as most general topics.

Pronunciation

Speak with clear, natural pronunciation and intonation.
