What is this course about?

The Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages is a course accredited by London Teacher Training College. The TESOL Programme will give students an introduction to the theory and practice of English teaching.

TESOL provides an insight into the challenges facing the learner and the role of the teacher in the classroom. Teaching methodologies, techniques to develop language skills, phonology and morphology, the teaching of English grammar, lesson planning, different learning styles and testing will be included.

01Course Synopsis

As an English Specialist, we develop professional trainers and teachers and at the same time prepare you to be successful "Edupreneurs". With the Diploma in TESOL, you can prepare for your career in teaching English as a second language, and will be qualified to participate in many teaching career opportunities.

The Diploma in TESOL is an internationally recognised qualification. The course is suitable for those who are new to teaching English and want to develop English language skills in students who are speakers of other languages.

The TESOL Programme will give students an introduction to the theory and practice of English teaching, including teaching methodologies, techniques to develop language skills, phonology and morphology, English grammar, lesson planning, different learning styles and testing. The practical aspect includes lesson observations and guided teaching practice.

02Entry Requirement

Minimum 18 years of age.

Language: At least C6 in English Language at O Level exam or its equivalent.

Academic:

  • 5 General Certificate of Education (GCE) 'O' Levels passes, OR
  • 2 General Certificate of Education (GCE) 'A' Levels passes, OR its equivalent
Students who do not meet these criteria will need to present IELTS test results (minimum score of 6) or undertake an Advanced Placement Test (minimum pass rate 75%).
03Award Criteria

A student graduates from the TESOL course if they:

  • Meet the minimum attendance requirements (Student Pass Holders: min. 90% attendance per month; non-Student Pass Holders: min. 75% attendance per month)
  • Score a minimum pass of C on all their assignments, all of which must be submitted to LTTC for grading

06Teaching Practicum & Assignments

Students will have an opportunity to plan and provide a demo lesson to their classmates. Students are trained to prepare lesson plans involving the four fundamental skills, as well as grammar and pronunciation. The instructor will evaluate students' lesson plans and classroom teaching, and the marks obtained will go into their final grade.

All trainees are required to complete the final assignment within two weeks of the completion of the course. A complete list of assessments is as follows:

  • One written assignment from each section of the main textbook (six written tasks total); each minimum 1,000 words, with evidence of further reading for a possible Grade A or better (per LTTC criteria)
  • Six lesson plans selected from the choices in module 3B assignment; each lesson plan should include handouts and activities, and the submission should be a minimum of 1,000 words
  • Submission of the final exam (open book) from module 4B
  • Teaching practicum: 30-minute lesson to be conducted at the end of the course

Award Criteria

  • 75% attendance for Local Students; 90% attendance for International Students on Student Pass
  • Minimum score is "C" to pass the course
Results: The College will contact the student personally when results are returned by LTTC β€” within 3 months of submissions being sent to LTTC.
